THE METAPHORS SYSTEM
We evaluate every piece across nine factors to understand its material integrity, craft value, and environmental responsibility.
The M.E.T.A.P.H.O.R.S Framework
M: Material| Fiber origin and level of processing
E: Elements | Primary fabric component used
T: Trims | Buttons, fastenings, or surface additions
A: Assembly | Construction and sewing method
P: Packaging | Shipping and protective materials
H: Handling | Care requirements & longevity
O: Origin | Source transparency of raw materials
R: Re‑Factor | Repurposing & circularity potential
S: Size | Inclusivity and production scale
This transforms a simple label into a story grid—communicating the journey of a product from raw material to final use. We believe sustainability is not a claim but a layered practice. Our framework evaluates materials, craft processes, and post-use potential to make informed design decisions. We are currently in the process of implementing this system for total transparency in the system.

HOW TO READ YOUR LABEL
For Example, if a product label has M1, E2, T1, A2, P1, H2, O2, R0, S1 then it can also read as 121212201
So, from the table we can deduce that the product is made out of 100% Natural raw materials (M1), and is composed of linen (E2), the trims, i.e., buttons is ceramic (T1). It is constructed and finished using hand machine like a JUKI sewing machine by a master tailor (A2) and packed in a textile bag (P1). The handling or wash-care is of linen i.e. (H2), since the material is woven in a small unit (O2). Since no part of it is composed out of recycled or repurposed material the label reads (R0), and the size is made custom on demand (S1)
This is how you can read the TMS label of Metaphors of Earth.

TMS GUIDE
| M – Material | E – Elements | T – Trims | A – Assembly | P – Packaging | H – Handling | O – Origin of Raw Material | R – Re‑Factor | S – Size | |
| 1 | 100% Natural (Unbleached): Unbleached cotton/linen/hemp/silk (minimal processing, natural color retained) | Silk | Ceramic | Entirely hand-sewn & hand-finished | Reusable packaging (returnable textile bags / containers) | Hand wash cold or gentle cycle (wash bag). No bleach. Air dry flat. Iron low with press cloth. Dry clean preferred. | Handspun & handwoven | 100% Repurposed | Custom |
| 2 | 100% Natural: Organic cotton, linen, hemp, wool, silk (single-fiber, certified where possible) | Linen | Mother of Pearl | Hand-machine sewn (low-energy small-scale production) | Glass (reusable & locally recyclable) | Gentle cold wash / wool cycle. No bleach. No tumble dry. Steam or iron low with cloth. | Handwoven or small-mill woven | Mostly Repurposed | Free |
| 3 | Natural Blend (Low Impact): Cotton + hemp, linen + cotton, wool + natural blends | Hemp | Wooden | Hand-finished (visible hand detailing) | Molded pulp / compostable paper inserts | Spot clean or gentle cold hand wash. Air dry in shade. Iron low with cloth. | Farm-grown, low-input agriculture | 50% Repurposed | XS |
| 4 | 100% Regenerated Cellulose: Lyocell / Tencel / Modal (closed-loop preferred) | Organic / Raw Cotton | Fabric ties | Machine-finished with hand inspection | Uncoated kraft paper | Gentle cold wash. Mild detergent. Air dry. Low steam iron. | FSC-certified forestry (where applicable) | Low Repurposed | S |
| 5 | Natural Blend (Higher Processing): Natural fibers with chemical finishing treatments | Jute | Metal | Fully lined construction | Recycled paperboard cartons | Machine wash cold/warm. Line dry. Iron medium while slightly damp. | Conventional farm-grown fibers | Minimal Repurposed | M |
| 6 | Bio-based Synthetic (PLA etc.): Bio-derived but industrially processed | Wool | Seed / plant-based buttons | Partially lined | Recycled corrugated cardboard | Dry clean preferred or very gentle cold hand wash. Air dry only. Iron low. | Industrial bio-feedstock | Limited Repurposed | L |
| 7 | Bleached Natural Fiber: Bleached cotton / linen blends | Bemberg | Cork | Unlined construction | Compostable film (only effective with compost access) | Gentle cold wash or dry clean. Air dry flat. Iron low–medium inside out. | Conventionally farmed fiber | Low Repurposed | XL-2XL |
| 8 | Bleached Conventional Fiber (Low Transparency): Standard cotton without certification | Tencel (uncertified) | Bamboo / coconut composites | Zero-waste pattern cutting | Reusable fiber bags (jute/hemp preferred) | Machine wash cold. Line dry. Iron medium. | Conventional supply chain | Low Circularity | 3XL-4XL |
| 9 | Regenerated (Low Transparency Chemistry): Regenerated fibers without clear closed-loop processing | Blends | Re-purposed/ recycled cycled trims | Near-zero waste cutting | Aluminum / recyclable tins (high energy but long life) | Dry clean only. | Industrial pulp sourcing | Low Transparency / Low Repurpose | 5XL-6XL |
